I'm loathe to write the obituary of any county that could come back to haunt Offaly later in the year, particularly seeing as we seem to be suffering from advanced onset rigor mortis ourselves at the moment, however it really is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel for Laois right now. They still throw up a good footballer here and there and Portlaoise are very well placed to give the All Ireland club championship a right rattle, however that's exactly how things were in the seventies and early eighties as well and it's probably not unreasonable to say that most Laois people won't look back on those days too fondly.

As Kildare fans can tell you, Micko's reign in a county can be quite the rollercoaster ride, but his legacy tends to be a lot less enjoyable. A lot of fuel tends to be burnt out in a very short space of time and building the reserves up again can be a tedious process. Kildare have only recovered now, and Laois will do very well to make another Leinster final in the next five years I suspect.

For all the talk about what happened in Portlaoise one of the most striking factors was just how abject Laois were prior to the brawl - 30 minutes with no points from play, very very little movement up front, players making mistakes and standing with their hands on their heads etc.

What happened in Tullamore against Kildare last Summer may not be the nadir for this team but rather just the beginning of a long spell in the doldrums
